NORMAN—Ronnie Keith, DO, a bariatric surgeon at Norman Regional Health System, is now offering Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) as a non-surgical weight loss option for his patients.

The ESG, also known as the accordion procedure, is an endoscopic procedure in which the inside of the patient’s stomach is sewn on the left side, creating a sleeve similar to Gastric Sleeve weight loss surgery without actually removing any part of the stomach.

Patients who may not qualify for weight loss surgery or who don’t want to have traditional surgery are able to have the ESG procedure and can expect to lose up to 50 percent of excess weight.

The procedure requires the same evaluation process as a weight loss surgery, including an initial consultation in the office, dietary visits prior to the procedure, and education guidelines. The procedure is performed under general anesthesia.

The procedure takes less than two hours to complete and patients get to go home the same day and can return to work a couple of days later with some restrictions on food intake.

ESG is not covered by insurance. It costs a patient $10,500, which covers all appointments prior to the procedure, the procedure itself, all anesthesia fees, surgeon fees, hospital fees, 90-day follow up care, and a protection program.

“I love having a new option for non-surgical weight loss for patients and I enjoy the opportunity to help,” Dr. Keith said. “The procedure is very satisfying so far because of all the patient satisfaction we’ve seen and the easier recovery time.”

Laura “Jolene” Ward, 49, of Muskogee, was Dr. Keith’s third ESG patient, with her procedure being performed on Nov. 28.

Prior to the procedure, Ward was 223 pounds and was at a point where she felt she had to do something about her weight.

Ward began looking at weight loss options, but she knew she didn’t qualify for weight loss surgery due to her weight, so she looked at non-surgical options.

“I’m not a spontaneous person. I did my research and I crossed all my T’s and dotted all my I’s before deciding to have the procedure and before deciding on a physician,” Ward said.

Now just two months after her procedure, Ward said she’s feeling great and is content with her weight loss of 25 pounds so far.

“The weight loss is steady and I’m not having any side effects from the procedure,” she said. “I loved my experience with Dr. Keith—he was great. He and his staff fully explained everything and prepared me for the procedure. The staff at Norman Regional was phenomenal and took such good care of me.”
